The Beginning
Fifteen studio albums, three live releases, numerous compilations, a boxed set and thousands of concerts later April Wine has become enormously popular in Canada, the United States and throughout the world.
The First Decade
By the spring of 1970 April Wine had relocated from Halifax to Montreal and were making a self-titled album for Aquarius Records. This first album established Myles Goodwyn as a composer with Fast Train receiving much airplay throughout Canada and becoming the main reason April Wine was able to record a second album. In the fall of 1971 Jim Henman left the band and was replaced by Montreal native Jim Clench.
Famed producer Ralph Murphy worked with the group on their second album On Record. Murphy’s mission was to give April Wine a major international hit and he came very close to doing just that. The album pushed the band into the North American public spotlight for the first time. You Could Have Been a Lady, originally recorded in England by Hot Chocolate, was a phenomenal hit for April Wine. This song provided the band with a #1 hit in Canada and allowed them to crack Billboard’s Top 30 in the USA where it remained for 11 weeks. On Record also included another notable tune; a cover of Elton John’s Bad Side Of The Moon.
Following the Gold success of the second album it was clear that April Wine had the chance to become one of Canada’s most significant rock bands. Ralph Murphy would be back to produce the follow up album but there would be changes in the band. By the completion of Electric Jewels a new April Wine would emerge. This band would no longer include the Henman brothers.
The Next Generation
This album remains a fan favorite with such classic songs as Weeping Widow, Just Like That and Lady Run Lady Hide. It provides a great example of the writing talents of Goodwyn and Clench.
The following spring the band hit the road with a national tour called The Electric Adventure. This tour was the first to use dramatic lighting and pyrotechnic displays as an integral part of their show, a feature that would prove to be extremely popular during their international stardom and would lend influence to various emerging artists, Garth Brooks for one.
The Making Of The Classics
Many people consider Stand Back to be one of the band’s greatest accomplishments. This album provided the hits Tonight Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love and I Wouldn’t Want To Lose Your Love but the non-hits were even more remarkable. Songs like Cum Hear The Band, Slowpoke, Don’t Push Me Around and Oowatanite helped push Stand Back to Double-Platinum status in Canada.
With the release of The Whole World’s Goin’ Crazy, Steve Lang had replaced Jim Clench on bass guitar. This album made April Wine the first Canadian band to achieve Platinum advance sales orders and included another April Wine classic in the ballad Like A Lover, Like A Song.
Forever For Now, the band’s sixth album, included a Canadian music milestone for the band; the best selling Canadian single the band ever released. Both the single, You Won’t Dance With Me, as well as the album reached critical acclaim with the single reaching Gold and the album reaching Gold then Platinum in Canada.
A Little Help From Our Friends

Now We're Five

The Capitol Years
Major artists such as Rush, Journey and Styx requested that April Wine open their shows in the United States. American audiences were finally being exposed to this “new” band called April Wine. Canada’s best kept secret was finally out in the open.
It was a confident group that recorded Harder…Faster in the summer of 1979. The album featured the hardest rock that April Wine had ever recorded. This album included such powerful songs as I Like To Rock, which American radio embraced, and Say Hello which went to the top of the charts in Canada. The popularity of these songs helped keep the album on Billboard’s 200 Album charts for a whopping 40 weeks! Harder…Faster helped the group collect more Gold and Platinum awards on both sides of the border.
The first months of 1980 saw April Wine touring as Nazareth’s opening act throughout the United States. In city after city promoters remarked on the powerful pairing of the bands. Most felt that the show would be a better draw if April Wine headlined. The time had finally come for April Wine to take top billing outside of Canada. A decade of hard work had finally paid off.
The Second Decade
During the 1980’s April Wine had the strongest concert repertoire ever and the demand for appearances had never been greater. They were in demand in Canada, the United Sates, England and Germany. In fact it seemed their popularity was traveling more than they were. There was the feeling that the band could tour forever.
Whether writing the songs, producing them, or promoting them, Myles Goodwyn had been working against some kind of “deadline” for the last three years with no significant time off. He needed a break… so he took one.
After a hiatus of 18 months, during which the band recorded Power Play with such cutting edge hits as Anything You Want You Got It and Enough is Enough, the band was ready to tour again. The 1982 Power Play tour was the largest tour April Wine had ever attempted. It incorporated the most elaborate stage the band had ever used. Their return to Canada, after two years away, saw them sell out shows across the country.
Yes the band was welcomed home with open arms but Power Play, even though successful, did not meet with the critical international acclaim that the group’s previous two albums enjoyed. Both Enough Is Enough and If You See Kay charted on Billboard’s Album Rock Tracks and remained there for a number of weeks but Enough Is Enough only remained on Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart for 8 weeks. However the album itself peaked Billboard’s 200 Album chart at 37 and remained on the chart for a strong 20 weeks, still a phenomenal accomplishment, but perhaps not enough for this perfectionist band from Canada.
With the release of Animal Grace, the group’s eleventh undertaking, things took a turn for the worse. This Could Be The Right One entered the charts very quickly but stalled just as abruptly. The album had taken an extremely long time to record and a rift had begun to form in the band.
In a move that seemed to symbolize the distance between Myles and the band, he and his family moved to the Bahamas. The group would get together once more for a farewell tour of Canada. The tour was a bittersweet one, with the die-hard fans realizing what lay ahead. A twelfth studio album was released that featured only two remaining members of the group; Myles and Brian. The rest had decided to go their separate ways.
The Solo Years
Myles Goodwyn subsequently released a self-titled solo album on Aquarius Records in Canada and Atlantic Records in the States while living in the Bahamas.
Brian Greenway released Serious Business on Atlantic Records in the States as a solo project in 1988. Jerry Mercer helped form the Buzz Band with Breen LeBoeuf and did various studio projects.
The Third Decade
The demand south of the border was strong as well. The band was selling out shows across the States with 20,000 people coming out to see them in San Antonio, Texas. In fact St. Louis, Missouri ended up adding a second show and the scalpers in Las Vegas were getting a high dollar for the valued tickets.
In 1992 the band consisted of Myles Goodwyn, Brian Greenway, Jerry Mercer, Jim Clench and Steve Segal. The group’s thirteenth studio album, Attitude, was released in 1993. It was their first studio release in 10 years. Attitude went Gold in Canada, driven by the hit If You Believe In Me. Segal remained with the band for the 1994 release of studio album number fourteen; “Frigate”.
1995 saw Steve Segal leave April Wine. April Wine returned to their roots as a 4 piece Rock band with 2 guitars, bass and drums as they were when they first started out in 1969. From 1995 to 2000 April Wine continued to tour Canada and the USA doing 80-100 shows a year playing to their ever growing legions of fans.
The studio album, “Back To The Mansion” released in 2001 was April Wine’s 15th studio album and first new release since 1994, and featured original members Myles Goodwyn (vocals, guitars and keyboards), Brian Greenway (guitars, vocals), Jim Clench (bass, background vocals), Jerry Mercer (drums).
“April Wine Live 2003” was released in spring of 2003 and featured the band’s live stage show. It was recorded in Kitchener Ontario. It also featured Carl Dixon on keyboard,vocals and guitar who had joined the band for 3 tours.
June of 2004 saw April Wine travel to Sweden to be part of “Sweden Rock 2004”
They shared the stage with HEART, FOGHAT, UFO and many others. In 2006 April Wine celebrated their 37th anniversary together with the release of their 16th studio album, “Roughly Speaking” (released November 21st 2006). Jim Clench left the band in January of 2007. He was replaced by Breen LeBoeuf, a talented bassist and singer, and a longtime friend of Jerry and Brian. Breen brought the experience of his many years as a member of the legendary Quebec rock band “Offenbach”.
In November 2008, April Wine signed with ARM Entertainment of St. Paul, MN. as the April Wine’s agency in the USA. Roger Anderson and his company have been booking many shows for the band in the USA to the delight of American fans. S.L. Feldman & Associates continues to represent April Wine in Canada. Late 2008 also saw the departure of Jerry Mercer from the band. About to turn 70 years of age in April of 2009, Jerry decided to retire. Jerry had been the driving drumming force of April Wine for 35 years! Blair Mackay joined April Wine as the new drummer in January 2009.
In March of 2009, April Wine was inducted into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame during Canadian Music Week in Toronto. They also received the Lifetime Achievement Award for being part of Canadian Music History for 40 years. On April 18th of 2010, at the Juno Awards, April Wine was inducted in to the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.
2010 sees the band continue their hectic pace touring both the United States and Canada to acclaimed reviews. They continue to satisfy fans with a live mix of straight ahead rock n’ roll and power ballads, an April Wine mainstay.
In the spring of 2011, Breen announced he was leaving the band. After a search for a suitable replacement, Richard Lanthier was chosen as the new bassist bringing a new tighter bass sound to the rhythm section, and backing vocals. During that year April Wine did 62 shows through Canada and the USA to very receptive fans, including 14 sold out shows in 17 days in British Columbia theaters.
2012 saw April Wine enter into their 42nd year as a band, with just as busy a schedule as ever… quite an accomplishment for any rock n’ roll band!
2012 to the present - READ ALL ABOUT IT!
Spring 2012 starts with a new change in the group’s line-up: Roy “Nip” Nichol replaces Blair Mackay on the drums. Roy is from Cornwall, Ontario and has been playing drums since the age of 15. He is also a great singer and having four vocalists in the band at the same time will be a new experience for the legendary band.
In 2014, Myles Goodwyn made waves in the music industry when he announced his intention to step down as the lead singer of April Wine. Despite not wanting to leave the band entirely, he was seeking a replacement for live performances. Myles ultimately decided to remain in the lead position but significantly reduce the number of live performances, from the norm of over 60 shows a year, to just 30. This allowed April Wine to keep moving forward with their music and touring, which they did until the Covid pandemic brought live performances to a halt in 2020.
As the world started to slowly recover from the pandemic, in December 2022, Myles announced that he would finally be stepping down from the lead position of the band. He made it clear that he wasn’t leaving April Wine entirely, but rather doing what he set out to do back in 2014. And now, he’s found his replacement in Marc Parent, a musician who had to turn down the opportunity back in 2014 due to family commitments, but was ready to take on the role in 2023.
On March 2, 2023, Myles Goodwyn performed his last official live show with April Wine in Truro, Nova Scotia, close to where it all started. Despite a massive snowstorm, fans filled the arena to enjoy the band’s performance. He announced that he might drop in and perform with the band from time to time, if they are in his area, but his days of touring coast to coast were over. “I’ve had a long career, happy, fulfilling. I’ve seen much of the world and I’m grateful for the continuing support of radio and our fans worldwide, but touring has been very difficult in recent years because of my diabetes and my health comes first, so unfortunately my touring days are officially over”, he said.
In 2023 April Wine was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, and Myles Goodwyn was also inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Sadly, Myles passed away in Halifax, Nova Scotia on December 3, 2023, at the age of 75.
Despite being referred to as a “new” lineup, it’s worth noting that the actual members of April Wine have been with the band for quite some time: Brian Greenway has been a member of April Wine since 1977, while Richard Lanthier and Roy Nichol have been with the band respectively since 2011 and 2012. Although Marc Parent is the newest addition, he is not new to the music industry and brings much experience to the band.
With a group of experienced rockers like this, April Wine is in a strong position to continue their legacy as one of Canada’s most iconic rock bands. Fans are eagerly anticipating every performances!
Biography
His voice is as distinctive and immediately recognizable as his song writing skills are prolific. Myles and the other members of April Wine were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall Of Fame in 2010.
Myles Goodwyn received the prestigious East Coast Music Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008 and the SOCAN National Achievement Award in 2002. In 2016 he released his memoir, named Just Between You and Me, which became an instant best seller on the Globe and Mail`s Non-Fiction List. His second book, Elvis and Tiger (fiction) was published in 2018 and was also very well received.
The Myles Goodwyn and Friends Of The Blues recording released in 2018 earned international acclaim and a Juno Nomination for Blues Recording of the Year in 2019. The recording won the ECMA award for Blues Recording of the Year 2019. His follow up blues recording in 2019, Myles Goodwyn and Friends of the Blues 2, won the same blues category in 2020.
“I’ve had a long career, happy, fulfilling. I’ve seen much of the world and I’m grateful for the continuing support of radio and our fans worldwide, but touring has been very difficult in recent years because of my diabetes and my health comes first, so unfortunately my touring days are officially over”, he said.

Myles Goodwyn who lived in the Halifax area achieved many feats with April Wine, including selling more than 10 million albums worldwide and receiving 11 Juno nominations. April Wine was inducted into Canada's Walk of Fame earlier this year. Goodwyn was also inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Brian Greenway, who has been playing guitar in April Wine for 46 years, got a text Sunday afternoon letting him know the band’s co-founder, lead singer and main songwriter, Myles Goodwyn, had died. Greenway couldn’t believe it.
“I was just stunned,” Greenway said on the phone from his home in St-Lazare Monday afternoon. “At first I thought it was a bit of a hoax because it was coming from his phone line as a text. I remember writing back: ‘What? Is this happening?'” Then he learned it was Goodwyn’s wife, Kim Goodwyn, who was texting him and he realized it was true.
“I was just lost for words,” Greenway said. “And it hasn’t really hit yet. There have been so many emails and texts offering condolences. But you have to grieve, too.”
Goodwyn died Sunday in Halifax surrounded by family. No details of his death have been revealed. He was 75. Goodwyn was born in Woodstock, N.B., in 1948 but grew up in Nova Scotia. It wasn’t an easy childhood. His mother died at a young age and the family didn’t have much money.
In a 2016 interview, he talked to me about those years.
“When my mom died, our whole family became dysfunctional,” Goodwyn said. “Four males living under the same roof, but there were never any hugs, never any communication. We were four lost souls roaming around that household. So I took to music. It was music that saved me.”
April Wine formed in Halifax, but they quickly moved to Montreal in 1970 to try to make it big. They had received a letter from Donald Tarlton (a.k.a. Donald K. Donald) and Terry Flood, who ran Aquarius Records, and the band wrongly assumed that meant they had been signed to the label. When they turned up at the Aquarius offices here, Tarlton and Flood were surprised to see them, but they eventually did sign them and the rest is history. Their first hit was You Could Have Been a Lady in 1972, but it wasn’t until the ultra-catchy hard-rocking number Roller in 1978 that they really broke in the U.S. and internationally. They had a slew of big hits in the second half of the ’70s and the early ’80s, notably Just Between You and Me, Sign of the Gypsy Queen and Rock ‘n’ Roll is a Vicious Game. They were famous for their mix of rocking tunes and big ballads.
April Wine sold more than 10 million albums and remains one of Canada’s best-known bands. Goodwyn had been involved with the band right until the end, but he announced last December that he would stop touring with them. His last show with April Wine was in Truro, N.S., in March. Goodwyn wrote virtually all of the key April Wine songs, a fact he was proud to underline in his 2016 autobiography, Just Between You and Me.
“At the risk of sounding vainglorious and self-serving, no one in AW ever wrote a hit song but me. And I’ve written more than one, thank heavens. I know that and they know that.”
Said Greenway: “He had a knack for writing beautiful songs that touched an awful lot of people.” The whole April Wine story doesn’t happen without Myles Goodwyn, added Greenway.
“It all starts with him,” Greenway said. “You can go back to the rehearsal room and that one song, Roller. Nothing would have happened without him bringing that song to the table.”
Goodwyn was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame this year, and that meant a lot to him. The last time Greenway saw his old friend and bandmate was when they were inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto in September. They spent a couple of hours chatting about the old days.
Greenway talks of how there was something really Nova Scotian about Goodwyn, something rural, even though he lived in the Montreal area from 1970 until 2018.
“He grew up in a ’50s Maritime kind of place,” Greenway said. “There’s a very different style of musician down in Halifax. He grew up in a very poor family and so when he got something, he wanted to hang on to it before someone could take it away from him.”
I tell Greenway that Goodwyn was very headstrong and that I meant that as a compliment. That’s how you have to be to make it in the vicious game that is rock ‘n’ roll, I added. “He never backed down from anyone or anything,” Greenway said. And more than anything, he loved making music. I first met Goodwyn in 2001 at his 19th-century farmhouse in Rigaud. Sitting in his dining room with the three other members of the band at the time — Greenway, Jim Clench and Jerry Mercer — Goodwyn explained why he was still out on the road more than 30 years after the band formed.
“You just love the music, it’s in you,” Goodwyn said. “You can’t help it. There’s nothing else I want to do. It’s clear for guys like us that we just don’t want to stop.”

During the recording of April Wine’s debut album, Myles Goodwyn began to take over from Jimmy Henman as the band’s lead singer. Myles also emerged as the key composer. His song Fast Train became April Wine’s first single and its success was probably the reason that April Wine was able to record a second album. Fast Train, written by Goodwyn, became April Wine’s first hit. It’s fast paced pop-oriented sound really jumps out in comparison to the “anti-commercial” sound on other parts of the record.
David Henman sums up his approach to the music:
“The songs I contributed to that first album were “stream of consciousness” pieces, different song ideas, kind of strung together in a way that made sense only to me.”
Fast Train shows up on the soundtrack of a movie called Natural Enemy.

After the success of Fast Train, the next album took on more of a “mainstream radio” sound. On Record was the album that established April Wine as a major international artist, on the strength of singles such as You Could Have Been A Lady, which became a number one hit in Canada and cracked Billboard’s Top 30.
Could Have Been A Lady becomes a hit and still sounds great, usually showing up during the encore of recent shows. It was a cover of a moderate hit for the group Hot Chocolate. Picked up in the U.S. on a label called Big Tree, it reached the Top 30 on the American charts. The producer, Ralph Murphy, sings the “na na na na”.
The curious “noise” between tracks was added by the producer after the fact. According to Henman the band was “shocked” when they first heard it. “I don’t think any of us liked it. What the intention was, what it was supposed to convey, I’m still not sure,” he added.
The riff for Drop Your Guns was inspired by Shine On by Humble Pie.
This record also featured the replacement of bassist Jim Henman by Montrealer Jim Clench.
Harrison Tabb, whom the album was dedicated to, was a black R & B singer from Montreal who died in a tragic car accident and was a close friend of David Henman.

The recording of Electric Jewels was marked by significant changes within the band. As a result of creative differences, the Henman brothers left April Wine and were replaced by guitarist Gary Moffet and drummer Jerry Mercer.
The high-energy sound of this album reflected the band’s increasing emphasis on live performance.
Weeping Widow was something of an FM Radio favorite at the time of its release.

Stand Back elevated April Wine from gold to multi-platinum status in Canada.
Although the Jim Clench/Myles Goodwyn songwriting team fell apart during the recording of this album, the record yielded many hits, notably Oowatanite, Tonite Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love and I Wouldn’t Want To Lose Your Love, as well as several songs, such as Cum Hear The Band and Slowpoke, which never became hits, but nevertheless helped make this a consistently rewarding album.
Some regard this as the first truly great April Wine album.

The Whole World’s Goin’ Crazy was the first Canadian album ever to achieve platinum advance orders, thanks to the phenomenal success of the previous LP.
The release of the album met with intense scrutiny from thousands of musical opinion-makers, all of whom were curious to see how the band would follow up the wildly successful Stand Back. Although the album sold only half as well as its predecessor, the band was subsequently offered a U.S. deal with London Records.
This album also featured Steve Lang’s debut as the band’s new bassist.

Following the release of “The Whole World’s Goin’ Crazy”, Myles Goodwyn decided he wanted to record a solo album, focusing on his early influences, such as Buddy Holly and the Everley Brothers.
However, April Wine could not afford to take such a long break at this time, and much of the solo material was converted into band material, resulting in the album “Forever For Now”.
The album featured all kinds of sounds, including country and western, latin, Caribbean, blues, easy listening, and rock.
The single You Won’t Dance With Me became a surprise hit, selling more copies than any other April Wine single ever had. Both the single and the album went platinum.

In 1977, armed with an additional brand new guitarist named Brian Greenway, April Wine signed a worldwide deal with Capitol-EMI.
Myles Goodwyn, who produced First Glance, decided that this would be a true “rock” record, with no soft rock or easy listening music on it.
The album’s third single, Roller, was considered too heavy to be released as a single, but in an extremely unusual move, the programmers at a radio station in Flint, Michigan, took it upon themselves to play the song anyway. Roller immediately became a top request number, and the song eventually became a Top 30 hit in the U.S.
First Glance became April Wine’s first gold record outside Canada, and this album is credited with bringing “Canada’s best kept secret” out into the open.

A hard-rocking, no-nonsense album, Harder…..Faster featured the song I Like to Rock, which was immediately embraced by American radio, and included guitar riffs from Day Tripper and Satisfaction. But it was the song Say Hello that ensured this album’s success.
It remained on CHUM, one of Toronto’s most popular stations top 40, for nearly twenty-seven weeks. All of April Wine’s work was finally paying off as their international fame and stardom grew.

The group began to tour around Europe, leaving their mark in each city they visited. The album The Nature Of The Beast was in fact recorded in England, at Le Manoir Studios, chosen because producer Mike Stone felt that this was a location that would allow the band to focus.
Although the only track to reach the Top 20 on Billboard was the ballad Just Between You and Me, The Nature Of The Beast became April Wine’s greatest success ever, selling over a million copies.
This album remains one of the all-time fan favorites, with many individual songs being released on subsequent compilations.

Animal Grace was the final album created by April Wine. Released in early 1984, much time and effort was put into the making of this record.
The distance between the band members had increased, and the end of April Wine was nearing. The group gathered together one last time for their final tour. Their final performances were spectacular, but the band never reconciled until the next decade.
They played their final show on a hot summer night in British Columbia, on the last day of July, 1984. This album is dedicated to Robbie Whalen.

When April Wine broke up, Myles retained the right to use the name April Wine, and recorded an album in 1986. The record included songs by Myles as well as some by outside writers, and featured Brian Greenway on guitar, Daniel Barbe on keyboards, Jean Pellerin on bass and Marty Simon on drums.
The album was good, but it wasn’t quite the same. Walking Through Fire did achieve success through two singles, Rock Myself To Sleep and a Goodwyn ballad titled Love Has Remembered Me. Following this album, April Wine officially broke up.

The problem with compiling the songs of a group that has released numerous albums is that a lot of good music gets omitted. The First Decade adds 18 digitally re-mastered songs from the 70’s to the band’s impressive collection. Some were legitimate hits. Many were an April Wine specialty; the rock ballad. Still others were essential Wine songs or just plain favorites. At least 4 songs are certain to surprise the listener.
With the passage of time, our perception of the 70’s is certain to change. A gradual consensus will develop concerning what we choose to remember and what we decide to forget. It is already evident that the fans want to remember April Wine. With The First Decade the memory will continue and perhaps even be enhanced.
